20-20 visions

BY Sonny Orr Jan 17, 2020

Looking back on the last decade it seems that the world has changed dramatically, but perhaps it was just Facebook cornering our attention until we were hooked on expressing ourselves to half the global population. I wonder just how many servers are now out there humming away to fill our minds with junk, including my last post. Will I be discarded in a giant purge as soon as the world’s storage space gets too jammed with billions of useless selfies? Luckily, I have few friends on Facebook.

Over the holidays, the entire nation was hit by a nasty bug and many people had to tough it out in some of the worst winter weather. It was a bit of a rollercoaster flu – up and down, feel okay sometimes, but mostly bad. Other than that, Christmas was a good time for many, and it seemed that there wasn’t much to complain about. Twenty-twenty rolled in on a fine night with mild temperatures, allowing people to stay outside long enough to enjoy the multitudes of fireworks that lit up the New Year. Music is always a nice touch and this year we enjoyed local and out-of-town musicians and bands. A nice touch I must say.

Then there’s the annual Christmas games that spice up the days when there’s nothing to do but feast and feast. I must admit that the new inches around my waist increased my blood pressure a bit, but I’m sure that a lot of carbohydrates and fats will burn off during the cold season. As the grouse and the ptarmigan taught us, the abundant fat under their skin is just showing that even they need to bundle up in winter. A cousin of mine, a miner, tells me that he’s heading further north where -60º is the normal temperature. Aarrgg. Winter is really here.

On a brighter side, it is a start of a good year – if you can ignore the constant threat of aggression that seems to saturate the digital world. Now even war is fought on social media and the message is strong enough to rattle everyone’s bones. I guess it could be like having a bad cold or a chill that isn’t related to the weather but more of fear. I hope we sleep well enough without having to worry about being caught up in another war. From what I see for now, it’s more of a tit for tat which was instantly spread around the world, filling my morning feeds with fearful threats. Pass me the Tylenol, I feel a nasty world headache coming up.

Aside from the future, which seems uncertain, the next crop of kids should able to work together since they have a better education and lifestyle than most of the rest of the world. So we might as well make the most of it and keep the future safer in the hands of people who will hopefully grow into a smarter, better and worldlier generation?

Let’s just concentrate on life back home, where potholes are the major problems and nice politicians are hard to find. But those problems we can live with just fine. It’s the uncertainty that bothers people, though that can be overcome by being more certain of what future we want to work toward. It just so happens that we live in a country that allows for just that and I’m all for the social security and public safety measures we have in place.

As I often like to say, Peace and Love.
