Celebrating the life of Willie Iserhoff

BY Joshua Janke Apr 19, 2024

With great sadness, we learn of the passing of Willie Robert Iserhoff.

Born in 1955, Iserhoff was a dedicated husband and father, and a friend and leader to many in Eeyou Istchee.

Iserhoff passed away peacefully at home March 26, surrounded by his loved ones during his last days. He is survived by his wife Annie and his children, Calvin, Fawn and Joshua.

Iserhoff will live on in the hearts of all those he helped with the services he provided the Cree Nation.

“Willie devoted his life to serving the Cree Nation, and the community in Mistissini will remember this,” stated the Cree Nation of Mistissini in extending the community’s condolences and gratitude for his contributions.

For nearly 30 years, Iserhoff served as Director of Cultural and Social Development with the Grand Council of the Crees. Iserhoff was equally a proud traditional harvester and family provider.

“His passion for passing on Cree knowledge and traditions will be remembered by those he worked and connected with over his life,” the Mistissini community added.

Serving as a Mistissini band councillor from 2018 to 2022, he was also a member of the local Trappers’ Committee.

“He will be profoundly missed, and his legacy will continue to inspire us going forward,” said the Cree Hunters Economic Security Board.

“Much loved by his colleagues, he offered wise counsel delivered with good humor to volunteers, staff, and consultants alike throughout our long association,” said Sarah Pash, Chair of the Eenou-Eeyou Community Foundation. Pash also identified Iserhoff as a “central ally” to the foundation in the development of the Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute in Ouje-Bougoumou.

In these moments of loss, the legacy of Willie Robert Iserhoff shines brightly. His dedication to his community, his commitment to preserving Cree heritage, and his leadership in various capacities for all of Eeyou Istchee will leave a lasting impact.

As we honour his memory, the Nation extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends and community. While Iserhoff may have left this world, his spirit and contributions will continue to inspire and guide us for generations to come.
