Christmas came early this year to the Elders of Waswanipi, who were treated to a special luncheon from Chief and Council on December 3. It was an initiative of Chief Marcel Happyjack, who will be away during the holidays and wanted to show the community’s love and appreciation for their Elders.
The Grand Opening of the Mattagami Odamino Centre dedicated to youth was held in Mattagami First Nation, December 4. The event featured guest speakers Ted and Brandon Nolan of NHL fame, Mattagami Chief Chad Boissoneau, Shirley Gillis-Kendall, Executive Director Kunuwanimano Child and Family Services, and Timmins Mayor George Pirie.
This year, Cree communities are once again organizing to create a special show of holiday kindness. To relieve hunger, stress and worries this cold holiday season, families and individuals in need can turn to their local food banks and health services to access resources and support.
With winter fast approaching, we find ourselves reminiscing over fond summer memories. For many youth, a favourite memory from this past July was the annual Wemindji Youth Canoe Expedition. It happens every year, but this one was extra special because it was the 25th anniversary.
