2023 Indigenous Firefighting Competition

More than 60 Indigenous firefighters from across Canada gathered in Kahnawake for the event. The seven teams from across Canada competed in judged events to determine the 2023 National Firefighting Competition Champion. All hailing from small communities, each team had its own set of unique challenges.

New Community Miyupimaatisiiun Committee partnership will support grassroots issues

A partnership agreement signed September 21 between the Cree Nation Government, Cree health and school boards and the nine Cree First Nations aims to support miyupimaatisiiun: the physical, spiritual, mental and emotional health and well-being of the people of Eeyou Istchee.

At the fifth National Gathering on Unmarked Burials, held in Montreal September 6-8, a Cree delegation shared their experiences searching former residential school sites on Fort George Island while learning from other communities and experts.

Trappers summit on wildlife management held in Mistissini

The Regional Cree Trappers’ Association (CTA) held a summit on wildlife management and the impacts of resource development in Mistissini August 15-16. Hunters, fishers, trappers and members of the Cree community gathered for the 2023 Maamuu Uhpikaapuutaau summit. Throughout the event, speakers discussed the tactics used in Eeyou Istchee to look after land, bodies of water and ecology.

Leaders from across the Cree Nation paid tribute to Elder Robbie Matthew Sr., who left this world at sunset on Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21. Some reflected that the timing of his passing was just one more reason to honour how significant his life had been, even until his last day.
